Triple A Study: Accelerated TMS Therapy for Adolescent Anxiety

Adolescents facing anxiety often find themselves struggling with the challenges of navigating their emotions and daily lives. Recognizing the critical need for effective treatment options, Salience presents the Triple A Study: Adolescents, Anxiety, Accelerated. This study seeks to explore the efficacy of Accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy as a potential solution for adolescents struggling with anxiety.

Understanding the Triple A Study

The Triple A Study aims to determine whether accelerated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy, TMS therapy,  is a clinically effective treatment option for adolescents dealing with anxiety. TMS is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, offering promising results for various mental health conditions.

We’ve already completed Phase I of the study and it showed good results: using a specific brain stimulation protocol for TMS Therapy called 1 Hz DMPFC-TMS is safe and doesn’t cause any major problems for teenagers and young adults who have Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This protocol seems to really help in lowering anxiety levels. In fact, 50% of participants felt a lot better after just 10 days, with very few of them feeling anxious. Also, 69% of participants had a positive response, meaning their anxiety levels went down by at least half compared to before. In addition, this study has shown positive symptom improvement on depression and suicide ideation. Take a moment to review our original study published in Brain Stimulation Journal.

We’re now heading into Phase II and we are enrolling 30 adolescents who will undergo 45 sessions of TMS Therapy, at no cost, over the course of three weeks.

Why Participate?

Participating in the Triple A Study not only provides adolescents with access to potentially transformative treatment but also contributes to the advancement of mental health research. By quantifying the effects of TMS on adolescent anxiety, we aim to pave the way for approval of this therapy for adolescents who urgently need it. This study serves as a crucial stepping-stone towards a comprehensive adolescent study.

Who Can Participate?

To be eligible for the Triple A Study, participants:

  • must have a primary diagnosis of anxiety
  • are 21 years of age, or younger
  • are located in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex
  • can adhere to a treatment schedule of three times/day, five days/week
