Proven Treatment For Clinical Depression
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment that uses repetitive MRI strength pulses to treat the cause of mood disorders like depression. At Salience, we use repetitive TMS, often called rTMS.
During an rTMS session, you'll recline in a comfortable chair with a small magnetic coil resting lightly on your head. This magnetic coil delivers gentle magnetic pulses to encourage and strengthen positive brain activity in networks that handle our mood regulation and thoughts.
Repetitive TMS isn't invasive, doesn't require anesthesia, and can be performed on an outpatient basis. It is considered well-tolerated by patients and has little to no negative or long-term side effects.

How does TMS Therapy work in the brain?
Each of us has neural networks that operate how to feel, think, and act. While we have many networks in our brain, we each have a particular network called the Salience Network that filters through all of your brain's signals and decides what is most important for you to focus on.
When the Salience Network is not synchronized, communicating properly, or is having difficulty relaying information, people will often experience depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and difficulty focusing.
TMS is a safe and effective treatment that uses MRI strength pulses to improve communication within the Salience Network, often improving symptoms of depression. During outpatient, non-invasive sessions, TMS encourages positive brain activity to reconnect your Salience Network, helping to strengthen your brain's ability to regulate mood and behavior.

Benefits of
TMS Therapy

Patients often experience other benefits, such as increased ability to focus, restful sleep, mild improvements in cognition and memory.

Patients can drive to and from treatment.

Patients can resume normal activities immediately. Treatment visits are in less than 30 minutes. That's less time than your average cardio or yoga class!

Combining multiple treatment approaches, like therapy, nutrition, and/or medication with TMS, is encouraged.

Salience rTMS vs. Antidepressants
The graph to the left is the STAR*D study (in black) alongside the results from over 400,000 Salience TMS treatments. The study was initiated by the National Institute of Mental Health and lead by researchers at UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX.
The STAR*D was the largest and longest study ever conducted to evaluate depression treatment. Published in 2006, it was a 7-year study of over 4000 patients. The study conclusively showed that by the 4th medication prescribed, the likelihood of achieving a positive outcome from the medication alone is less than 7%.
Salience patient remission rates range from 50% to 60% compared to only 6.9% for patients with a fourth trial of antidepressant medication. rTMS offers patients a chance at remission from their depression when other treatments have failed.
